Corrosion Behavior of Alloyed Cast Iron in Ethylene Glycol-Based Engine Coolants at Elevated Temperature

For enhanced engine performance, corrosivity of the coolants would play a significant role. In this work, corrosion investigation was performed on cast iron material in pre-mixed coolant environment to understand threshold limits contaminants. The contained combination organic additives viz. sebacate (SA), 2-ethylhexanoate (2-EH), and tolyltriazole (TTA) with varying concentrations chloride contaminant. Constant immersion samples different levels at 90 °C followed by room temperature electrochemical tests. potentiodynamic polarization tests showed no instability until 100 ppm additions exposed up 28 days. At lower frequencies impedance spectroscopy (EIS) spectra, inhibition layer characteristics changed from highly capacitive resistive concurrently sharp decrease charge transfer resistance observed time for >100 levels. longer duration tests, higher pit depths increased number density attacks were containing chloride. elevated exposures limit <200 established samples.
